An Epic Partnership: Pizzi and Kunde

A little more than a year ago, Greg was chatting over dinner with his longtime friend and brilliant stage director Pier Luigi Pizzi. The two were reminiscing about the many productions on which they had collaborated over the years. And then someone mentioned Verdi’s often-forgotten Stiffelio, and the two agreed that this should be their next collaboration.

Fast forward one year, and the two met again. This time, it was in rehearsal in Piacenza for the compelling and heart wrenching drama of Stiffelio.

Another debut for the tenor, Kunde tackled the title role with his trademark intensity and authenticity. This, in combination with his incredible vocal technique, resulted in a tremendous success for Kunde, with performances in all three venues - Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, and Modena - sold out. The response to Kunde’s portrayal of the betrayed and forgiving minister was overwhelming. Critics and audiences agreed it was yet another highlight in the tenor’s long and illustrious career. Kunde hopes to reprise this role soon, as it is yet another tour de force from Verdi for the dramatic tenor.

The collaboration of Pizzi and Kunde was an emotional and creative foundation for the new production, which featured Pizzi’s signature classic set design and Kunde’s remarkable acting abilities. This reunion of old friends proved to be memorable for many reasons.
